◆講演要旨:Bley-Vroman (1990) proposes that “child language development and adult foreign language learning are in fact fundamentally different” and that one of the fundamental differences is the incomplete mastery of L2 by adult L2 learners. Then what leads to the unsuccessful mastery of L2? In this talk, I will report on an empirical study examining the syntax-semantics interface in English speakers’ L2 acquisition of Chinese wh-words used as existential polarity words. Based on the data collected from this study, I will propose an L1 Dependent Interface Hypothesis, that is, grammatical aspects involving an interface between syntax and other cognitive domains is acquirable in adult L2 grammars if such an interface is established in some form in learners’ L1; however, L2 items which are not available in learners’ L1 will not be able to establish an interface relationship with another element in adult L2 grammars although they can fulfil their syntactic and semantic functions in a non-interface domain. The lack of interface “wiring” causes persistent interface problems in L2 grammars.
